Let me be straight with you from the jump: I am not writing this from the finish line. I'm writing this from the middle of the race running shoes on, breathing hard, figuring it out as I go. That's the whole point of this blog.
I wrote a book about building business credit because the information out there was scattered, confusing, and honestly a lot of it felt like "hooks with no bait." Someone would get you excited about the process, dangle the promise of funding and tradelines, then leave you stuck with no real direction. I've been there. More than once.
So here's my real story. Where I am right now. What's working, what wasn't, and what I'm waiting on.
Where I Started (Again)
I'm not brand new to this. I had a Quill account already one of the go-to starter net-30 vendors that actually reports to business credit bureaus. But here's the thing: I had stopped using it. I got caught up following someone else's program that turned out to be more confusion than clarity. By the time I stepped back, I hadn't touched the account in so long it was basically inactive.
A dormant net-30 account does nothing for your credit profile. It's not just about having the account you have to actually use it and pay on time for it to report and move your score.
So in a lot of ways, I'm starting over. But not completely. I have pieces in place my LLC, my EIN, my D&B number, and the Quill account. The foundation is there. I just have to build on it the right way this time.
The Amazon Business Mistake
Here's one I want you to learn from so you don't make the same move I did.
I applied for an Amazon Business account. It made sense on the surface Amazon is everywhere, the application is easy, and it feels like a legitimate business expense vendor. But before I got too far in, I did my research. I used ChatGPT to dig into it, then came to Claude to verify. Every source said the same thing:
Amazon Business does not report positive payment history to business credit bureaus. It only reports negative activity meaning if you miss a payment, it hurts you. But paying on time? That does absolutely nothing for your PAYDEX score or your Experian Business profile. And it's not free.
I cancelled it. Not worth paying for an account that can only hurt you and never help you. If you're building business credit, every vendor account you open needs to be one that reports positive payment history to at least one of the major business bureaus Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, or Equifax Business.
The D&B Address Problem Nobody Warns You About
This one is big and I don't see enough people talking about it.
When I first formed my LLC, I was in Cowpens, SC. That's the address that got attached to my D&B record. Fast forward to now I've moved, my business address has changed, and everything needs to match up. We're talking:
- LLC registration address
- EIN address on file with the IRS
- D&B / DUNS number address
- Business phone number (needs to be listed)
- Website (yes, this matters too)
Lenders and credit bureaus cross-reference all of this. If your LLC says one address, your D&B says another, and your website has no address at all that inconsistency signals risk. It makes your business look less legitimate, even if everything is completely above board.
I submitted a correction to Dun & Bradstreet to update my address. They told me it's about a 7-day process. Until that's done, I'm holding off on applying to additional net-30 vendors because I want everything to match before I do.
That's not me being slow. That's me being smart. Applying for vendor credit before your business information is consistent is like showing up to a job interview with two different names on your resume. Why create doubt?
Where Things Stand Right Now
What's Next
Once the D&B address is corrected and everything is consistent across the board, I'll be applying to a couple more net-30 vendors specifically Crown Office Supplies and Summa Office Supplies. Both are known to report to D&B, which is exactly what I need to start building my PAYDEX score.
I'll document all of it right here. The applications, the approvals, what reports and what doesn't, and how long it takes. No fluff just what actually happens.
